Pubs in Ipswich

Welcome To The Compasses…

The Compasses is one of the oldest pubs in Ipswich and has been a part of the local community for 100s of years and will continue to do so under the management of Ken and Jan Lellow. On taking over in October 2016 they have given the pub a much needed £35,000 refurbishment and it is now offering a blend of good quality food for everyone plus great service and stylish atmosphere.

The Compasses was originally built in 1725 and named The Butcher and Compasses. You can see the original building section on the left of the photograph of the front of the pub. The right-hand side section of the pub was used as a stable block with an open courtyard that was used for horse-drawn carriages.

The first recorded landlords of the pub were William Herbert in 1825, Sara Herbert in 1841 and Joseph Herbert from 1851-1861, Joseph was actually a butcher too!

We no longer sell meat but they do offer great main, bar and takeaway menus. We serve every day from 11am til late every evening. There’s a well-kept range of beers, lagers, wines and soft drinks with comfortable seating areas for you to relax in comfort.
